"VELAS"
(sails), is the new CD and 2007 concert by Alta Madera: it symbolises
sea voyages, the ocean, and represents the crossroads of musical cultures
that mix in search of new and original forms of expression.
It follows the journey of the first album "Alta Madera": original
compositions inspired by images of nature and the classical styles of
the Latin tradition interpreted in the typical jazz key of the three unusually
assembled instruments (violin, guitar and double bass).
The sounds and insistent rhythms without percussion, which are typical
of the trio, are joined in some pieces by solo or choral vocal cues.
The original pieces are the Tango, "Viento y Velas",
which looks to Argentina; the whirling "Mariposa", the
most Mediterranean piece, in which a Macedonian clave in 7/8 transforms
into a blues waltz with a flamenco crescendo; "Girasoles",
a neo-impressionist rumba dedicated to the memory of the great masters
of Cuban music; "Niños", a modern remixing of
Cuban 18th century contradance with New York rap, inspired by the dream
of the adult as a child; "Mosquito" a Venezuelan Joropo
with a noble melody and frenetic and incessant rhythm like the flight
of a mosquito; "Calle San Lasaro" a musical ballad that
narrates how we can feel at home wherever we travel in the world.
Alta Madera also reinterprets several jazz and Latin music classics such
as "Poinciana" (Buddy Bernier/Nat Simons), the tropical
tree with red flowers that was born in Madagascar and lives in Latin America
between Mexico and Puerto Rico; "No puedo ser feliz",
a memorable melody by Adolfo Guzmàn and Ignacio Cervantes' classic
"Los Tres Golpes" reread in a modern chamber music style.
